U.S. President Joe Biden allocates $2.5 billion in aid to Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden has announced the allocation of an additional security assistance package for Ukraine worth $2.5 billion. This has been made possible by his efforts over the past few weeks in office to strengthen military support for Kyiv ahead of the transition to Donald Trump's presidency.
According to Reuters, the aid package includes $1.25 billion in military assistance from U.S. stocks and $1.22 billion as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which is the latest from USAI during Biden's presidency.
Under the USAI program, military equipment is purchased from defense contractors or partners rather than taken from U.S. stockpiles. This may cause delays in deliveries to the battlefield by several months or even years.
Over nearly three years of war, Washington has allocated a total of $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, but it is unclear whether aid will continue at the same pace under Trump’s presidency, which will begin on January 20.
Trump has expressed his intention to quickly end the war. During the presidential campaign, he questioned the level of U.S. involvement in the conflict, emphasizing that European allies should bear a greater financial burden. Some Republicans, who will control both chambers of Congress starting next month, also express less support for providing additional aid to Kyiv.
Currently, the U.S. Department of Defense is supplying Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, thousands of missiles, and hundreds of armored vehicles, which, according to Biden, will 'strengthen Ukraine's position ahead of winter.'
Previously, the former head of the Pentagon proposed an unexpected solution regarding missile defense for Ukraine.
