Marino Shipping Company compensated for environmental damages after pollution of marine waters in Odesa region.

The contracted company Marino Shipping Co Pte Ltd paid the government 64.8 million UAH in compensation for the pollution of the 'Yuzhny' seaport in the Odesa region with palm oil in 2020.
Initially, the company refused to voluntarily compensate for the damages, so the case was sent to court. The claim was considered with the participation of the specialized ecological prosecutor's office. On July 11, 2022, the Economic Court of the Odesa region partially granted the claim and obliged the company to pay 64.8 million UAH. However, the final amount was paid only on January 17, 2025.
What happened to the water area of the 'Yuzhny' port
On April 30, 2020, the vessel 'Stavanger' accidentally discharged 8,437 kg of palm oil into the sea at the 'Yuzhny' port.
The State Environmental Inspectorate reported that this led to significant pollution of Ukraine's internal marine waters: 'Laboratory studies confirmed the exceedance of the norm for fats and oils in sea water up to 77 mg/dm³.'
As a result, state inspectors drew up a protocol on administrative offenses, and the captain of the vessel was convicted under Part 1 of Article 59-1 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. The damages caused to the state amounted to 2.4 million dollars (over 64 million hryvnias).
