A Latvian volunteer died in a difficult battle for Ukraine
In a difficult battle for Ukraine, a Latvian volunteer, Edgar Platonov, lost his life. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Latvia. The official statement notes that he died on December 25, 2024, in Novoyehorivka, Luhansk region.
The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, expressed condolences to the family and comrades of Edgar Platonov. He wrote on social media:
'Another of our volunteers has died defending the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Deep condolences to the family and fellow fighters of Edgar Platonov. Eternal memory to the hero.'
The family of the fallen volunteer stated that Edgar will always be with them in memories and love. They respect his courage and selflessness.
This is not the first case where Latvian volunteers have died in Ukraine. The death of Vitalijs Smirnovs, a citizen of Latvia, occurred due to a Russian drone strike in Lyman, Donetsk region, on October 1, 2023. Taiwanese volunteer Wu Zhong died on November 1 during a battle with Russian troops. A British serviceman, Callum Tindall-Draper, also died.
