Sociologist names an unexpected obstacle for the return of Ukrainian refugees home.

As a result of the war, Ukrainian society has undergone significant changes, leading to an increased sense of injustice and anger. It is said that one of the reasons for such emotions is the Ukrainians who are abroad. However, the overwhelming majority of Ukrainian citizens view refugees neutrally or positively.
“The attitude towards refugees is more aggressive on social media than in representative surveys. On social media, people often write that 'they are enjoying Europe while we are suffering from enemy attacks,' 'that if they don't want to help fight against the Russian Federation, they should stay there, and we will do our own thing,' and so on.”
Research shows that many Ukrainian citizens have a neutral or positive attitude towards refugees. However, attitudes may depend on the category of refugees. The most positive attitude is towards mothers with children, while the least positive is towards men over 60.
In general, Ukrainians have a less favorable attitude towards foreign refugees than towards internally displaced persons. About 30% of Ukrainians have a cool opinion of refugees. Potential tensions may arise concerning Ukrainians abroad, but currently, there are no serious issues.
“Moreover, refugees continue to see negative attitudes towards themselves on social media. This complicates their return. Many refugees still plan to obtain citizenship in the countries they are in instead of returning to Ukraine. Only a third plan to return, approximately 2 million out of 6-7 million. But among the 4-5 million who will stay, there will be men who currently do not have the right to emigrate,” comments the expert.
Sociologist Volodymyr Paniotto emphasizes the importance of fostering a positive attitude towards refugees, as it is necessary for preserving Ukraine's human resources.
We remind you that millions of Ukrainian refugees in European Union countries may lose their legal status if there is a ceasefire in Ukraine. The EU currently has no plan for such a case.
